(Austin, TX, March 10, 2026) – The Texas New Mexico Hospice & Palliative Care Organization is proud to recognize Michelle Garcia, RN, Clinical Supervisor at Hospice of Ochiltree General Hospital, as a recipient of the Charley Wasson Hospice Advocate Award. This prestigious honor recognizes hospice professionals and volunteers who demonstrate exceptional dedication to the mission and values of hospice care.
The Charley Wasson Hospice Advocate Award is presented to individuals who have served in hospice for at least three years and have demonstrated commitment to the core values of hospice, innovative approaches to expanding hospice services, and continued professional and personal development in service to patients and families. Each year, no more than four recipients are selected for this recognition.
Garcia was nominated by colleagues who describe her as a compassionate leader and steadfast advocate for patients, families, and hospice professionals. As Clinical Supervisor, she ensures high standards of care while fostering a supportive culture among her team. She dedicates significant time to mentoring new nurses, guiding them through the emotional and clinical complexities of end-of-life care and modeling the empathy that defines hospice practice.
Her commitment to the hospice mission extends beyond her organization. Garcia has led community outreach efforts to educate families about hospice services, helping ensure patients have access to compassionate end-of-life care when they need it most. She has also championed improvements in pain management protocols, strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration, and promoted holistic support addressing patients’ emotional and spiritual needs.
Recently, Garcia identified a critical need within her community for specialized wound care services. In response, she pursued additional training and achieved certification as a Certified Wound Care Specialist, further enhancing the care available to hospice patients in her region.
Colleagues frequently describe Garcia as “the heart of our hospice,” a leader who listens deeply, acts thoughtfully, and never loses sight of the dignity of those she serves. Families often share how her presence brought comfort during their most difficult moments—whether through a reassuring conversation, a late-night visit, or simply sitting quietly beside a loved one.
Through her leadership, advocacy, and unwavering compassion, Garcia exemplifies the spirit of the Charley Wasson Hospice Advocate Award and the profound impact hospice professionals have on patients, families, and communities.
